Winterize Your Plumbing
As you prepare your home for freezing temperatures this season, don’t forget about your plumbing. When water freezes, it expands. If the temperature of your pipes drops below 32 degrees (F), there is a risk of pipe fracture, leaks, and water damage.
Below are some tips to winterize your plumbing when temperatures are at or below freezing, and stop frozen pipes before they happen.
1. Disconnect all garden hoses from the outside hosebibs.
2. Open up all cabinets inside your home that have plumbing located within them to allow warm air to the water lines under each sink.
3. Open up a couple faucets to drip to prevent pipes from freezing, especially any that are located on outside walls.
4. If you have a sprinkler backflow, insulate the pipes or disconnect it until spring.
5. A bathroom or laundry room adjacent to a garage can be vulnerable. Keep the garage door closed to maintain maximum heat.
6. Set the temperature in the home no lower than 55 degrees (F).
